In America: A Lexicon of Fashion
/We were graced with the Met Gala 2021. After having to cancel last year and postpone this year, the Met Gala is back. We had the opportunity to get back to fashion. This year bought us lots of drama as usual. One of things that I felt was missing from the evening was the inclusion of more BIPOC designers. It felt a disservice to have one of the largest nights of fashion to occur and not have more BIPOC representation. After a turbulent 2020, a year where we demanded justice and equal treatment for ALL individuals it was curious to see that we reverted back to where we were before we wanted equal justice.
America represents so many things to so many of its countrymen. It has given each person a different and unique perspective. With those perspectives, one would think that a collection of different designers of would with different design aesthetics would be welcome at the Met Gala. In an almost post-pandemic world, America the beautiful should have been well more beautiful. I’m not the here, at least at this moment, to give my overall opinion on this country.
Shouldn’t America the beautiful be beautiful not for its landscapes but the melting pot of different cultures? In America, we have different cultures that again bring different viewpoints. BIPOC representation is not just important but necessary. America is not just represented by ‘Mayflower’ glory but in also in the pain that some many in the BIPOC population have had to endure.
Some may say that this wasn’t the night for this. I would agree then when is the time? Just because it is something that you can ignore it doesn’t mean it is not important. Every culture, every person, every viewpoint should be celebrated.
After all isn’t that what America is about?
